Enroll, and that’s it!
Every month that you pay your electric bill as a member of our green power program, you increase demand for renewable energy on the New England power grid, reducing our need to burn fossil fuels. The average household pays $10-$20 per month for renewable energy in addition to their regular electricity bill, and that premium is federally tax-deductible!
Our members choose renewable energy instead of fossil fuels—taking a simple stand against climate change in their daily lives. You can use your electric dollar to put renewable energy onto the New England power grid today.
Switching works like this:
1. Choose your green power mix
Our green power program offers two different renewable energy mixes for you to choose from. Each option has a different price:
|Mix||100% wind power from New England wind turbines (Class 1)||25% (MA) or 30% (RI) renewable energy from New England wind and solar, hydro and anaerobic digestion (Class 1)|
|Rate||3.8 cents/kWh in addition to your normal electric bill||2.2 cents/kWh in addition to your normal electric bill|
Payments to both programs are 100% federally tax-deductible!
2. Enroll online or via phone
Enrolling is easy: just fill out our simple online join form. All you need is your electric account number.
If your utility is National Grid or Eversource in Western MA: Once you’re successfully enrolled, our green power service will begin during your next electric billing period. It may take up to 2 months for green power charges to appear on your bill. You can cancel the service at any time by calling our office.
If your utility is Eversource in Eastern MA: Once you’re signed up, Green Energy Consumers will receive your monthly electricity usage in kilowatt-hours from Eversource (around the time you get your electric bill). We will use that information to bill your credit card for that month’s green power service. You can cancel the service at any time by calling our office.
3. Pay your electric bill as normal
You continue to pay your electric bill as you normally would, but with our green power program, you pay a few cents extra per kilowatt-hour for renewable energy.
For every kilowatt hour that you use, we are ensuring that a renewable energy generator puts enough power onto the grid to meet your usage. Your support, combined with the support of thousands of other Green Energy Consumers members, increases demand for renewable energy on the New England power grid, funds new sources of renewable power, and reduces our need to burn fossil fuels for electricity.
Green Energy Consumers uses your contributions to purchase renewable energy certificates (RECs) from a renewable energy generator on your behalf. Purchasing renewable energy certificates for the energy you consume is the only way to claim that the electricity you pulled from the power grid came from renewable energy sources. And your contributions for REC purchases make more renewable energy possible in New England.
